Until recently, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could result in variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. This differing reproduction may, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the same population. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial and claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from textbooks for high school and have also gotten rid of references to the evolutionary history of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This support is based on various reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing medicines and other treatments, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, whereas others have an intense belief in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians, but not all.  에볼루션코리아  fall in one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs may be less known However, their beliefs are as passionate like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the idea that scientific principles like biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible, because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles out of fear they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were created simultaneously, and that they evolved slowly afterward. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to remove portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country.  에볼루션코리아  of the newest biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
